Spicy Tomatillo Salsa Recipe (Smoky, Bold, and Better Than Store-Bought)

A smoky, bold salsa made with charred tomatillos, onion, garlic, jalapeño, and Serrano peppers, blended with lime juice and cilantro.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoons olive oil
  • 9.5 tomatillos
  • 0.5 onion halved
  • 2 jalapeño peppers
  • 2 Serrano peppers use 1 for less spice
  • 4 garlic cloves with peel
  • 1 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper
  • 0.5 lime juiced
  • 1 teaspoons chicken bouillon optional
  • 0.3 cups fresh cilantro to taste

Instructions

  • Heat skillet and add vegetables: Heat 1 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the 9.5 tomatillos, 0.5 onion, halved, 2 jalapeño peppers, 2 Serrano peppers (use 1 for less spice), and 4 garlic cloves, with peel.
  • Char vegetables: Char for 15 minutes
  • , flipping occasionally so they blister on all sides.
  • Peel garlic: Carefully peel the charred garlic and add all the charred ingredients directly to a blender.
  • Blend the salsa: Add 1 teaspoons salt, 0.5 teaspoons black pepper, 1 teaspoons chicken bouillon (optional), 0.5 lime, juiced, and 0.3 cups fresh cilantro, to taste to the blender. Pulse until you reach your desired consistency.
  • Taste and adjust: Taste and adjust salt or lime juice as needed.
  • Serve: Serve with tortilla chips.
